The undoing of this gruesome twosome proved to be Karla’s teenage sister, Tammy, whom Paul had always lusted after.
In mid-1990 he started pressuring Karla to help him have sex with Tammy. By December 23, Paul, a sexual psychopath and lousy rap star, decided the little vixen’s time was up. After they drugged Tammy, Karla videotaped her husband raping her. Later that night Tammy died as she choked on her own vomit. Her death was found accidental and the Homolka’s carried on to the tune of two more deaths, 14-year-old Leslie Mahaffy and 15-year-old Kristen French, before their arrest.
In 1993 Karla plea-bargained a guilty charge on two manslaughter deaths in exchange for testifying against her sexually predatory ex husband. The ensuing media circus surrounding their trial, known as Canada’s „Trial of the Century,“ rivaled the O.J. feeding frenzy that mesmerized the US public. Even the Internet was pulled into the fracas when press reports on the case were banned in Canada and resurfaced in cyberspace. Karla is now serving 12 years for manslaughter. On September 1, 1995, Paul was found guilty of all charges and declared a „dangerous offender“. He is now serving life in prison with no possibility of parole.

A sexual sadist, obsessed with the desire to bite female breasts, Canadian Wayne Boden became infamous as the „Vampire Rapist,“ after his distinctive modus operandi. Stalking his victims in the neighborhood of Montreal, he sparked a two-year reign of terror with attacks that drew particular attention for their brute ferocity. On July 23, 1968, Norma Villancourt, a 21-year-old teacher, was found dead in her Montreal apartment. She had been raped and strangled, her breasts savaged with bite marks , but police reported no evident signs of a struggle. In fact, a pathologist noted the victim had died with a passive, faint smile on her face. The best part of a year elapsed before the killer struck again, in 1969, strangling Shirley Audette and dumping her corpse at the rear of an apartment complex in West Montreal. Though fully clothed when found, she had been raped, and their were bite marks on her breasts. A conversation with the victim’s former boyfriend brought to light her fears that she was „getting into something dangerous“ with someone she had started dating, but the suspect’s name had not been mentioned. On November 23, Marielle Archambault left her job at a Montreal jewelry store, departing with a young man she addressed as „Bill.“ When she did not appear for work the next morning, Marielle’s employer went to see if she was ill. He found her on the floor of her apartment living room, the victim of a strangler who had raped her, ripping off her bra to gnaw her breasts. A crumpled photograph discovered in the wreckage of her flat was readily identified as that of her companion, „Bill,“ but homicide detectives still could not connect the smiling face with any real-life suspect. On January 16, 1970, the killer struck again, picking off Jean Wray, 24, in her Montreal apartment. On arrival for a scheduled date, Wray’s boyfriend found her door unlocked, her naked body on the sofa, bloody bite marks on her breasts. Despite the clear-cut evidence of violence, officers could find no sign of a protracted struggle; once again, the victim looked serene in death. The fear in Montreal was little more than an unpleasant memory by 1971, when the Vampire Rapist made his next appearance some 2,500 miles away, in Calgary. His victim was Elizabeth Pourteous, a teacher, reported missing from work on May 18. Her apartment manager was called, and found her body on the bedroom floor, surrounded by wreckage of a struggle. Raped and strangled, she had also suffered the familiar bite marks on her breasts. A broken cufflink was discovered near the body. Two colleagues at her school recalled that Pourteous had been seen with a young man, in a blue Mercedes, on the night she died. The car had featured a bull-shaped decal, advertising beef, in one window. A friend of the victim also informed police that Pourteous had recently started dating a new acquaintance — named „Bill“ — who fit descriptions of the Vampire Rapist. On May 19, patrolmen found the suspect car parked near the murder scene. Wayne Boden was arrested half an hour later, moving toward the car on foot. He told police that he had moved from Montreal a year earlier, admitted seeing Elizabeth Pourteous on the night she died, and identified the cufflink as his own. The final confirmation was delivered by an orthodontist, who compared a cast of Boden’s teeth with bite marks on the victim, earning Wayne a term of life imprisonment . Returned to Montreal for trial, he openly confessed to three of the related murders, oddly balking in the case of Norma Villancourt. It was enough, regardless, and his four life sentences appeared to guarantee that Boden would be permanently out of circulation.

For the best part of a decade, between 1973 and ’81, Canadian authorities were baffled by a series of unsolved sex-murders along the Trans-Canada Highway, spanning the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. Victims ranged in age from 12 years old to 35, and while published sources could never agree on a body-count — citing various totals from 11 to 33 victims — the most frequent tally lists 28 slayings spread over eight years. Many of the victims were apparently hitchhikers, sexually assaulted before they were beaten, strangled, or stabbed to death, with some of the bodies revealing post-mortem mutilations . Generally acknowledged as the first „Highway“ victim, 19-year-old Gale Weys was thumbing her way home to Kamloops, from a job in Clearwater, when she met her killer on October 19, 1973. Her naked, decomposing corpse was found a few miles south of Clearwater, on April 6, 1974. By that time, the killer had claimed another victim, picking off 19-year-old Pamela Darlington, at Kamloops, on November 6. Her ravaged body was fished out of the Thompson River next day, and a train crew reported sighting a man with „messy blond hair“ near the scene of the crime, but the vague description led detectives nowhere. Colleen McMillan, 16, was last seen alive on August 9, 1974, thumbing rides near Lac La Hache. A month later, on September 4, her nude, decomposing remains were found some 35 miles away. Police suspected a drug addict, who confessed the murder and then recanted before committing suicide. The case remains officially unsolved. On January 9, 1976, 16-year-old Pauline Brazeau was found stabbed to death, outside Calgary. Six months later, on July 1, 19-year-old Tera White disappeared from Banff, her skeletal remains discovered near Calgary in March 1981. Marie Goudreau, 17, was murdered near Devon on August 2, 1976, and 20-year-old Melissa Rehorek was murdered near Calgary on September 15, her body discarded 12 miles from the spot where Pauline Brazeau was discovered. Barbara McLean, age 26, traveled all the way from Nova Scotia to meet her death near Calgary, by strangulation, on February 26, 1977. Monica Jack, 14, disappeared while bicycling near Merritt, on May 6, 1978, and she has not been seen since, though her bike was recovered at the bottom of a highway embankment. On September 26, 1979, 12-year-old Susan Duff went biking near Penticton, her body recovered from the outskirts of town on October 21. Mary Jamieson, 17, disappeared while hitchhiking near Davis Bay, on August 7, 1980; nine days later, when her body was discovered in the nearby woods, the cause of death was listed as asphyxiation. On February 28, 1981, victim Oanh Ha — a 19-year-old Vietnamese refugee — was raped and strangled near Golden, her body mutilated after death. Two months later, on April 22, 15-year-old Kelly Cook was reported missing, her body recovered near Taber, Alberta, on June 29. The only male victim in the series, transvestite Frederick Savoy, was parading in drag when the killer mistook him for a woman, knifing him to death in a Vancouver parking lot. Maureen Mosie, generally described as the last „Highway“ victim, was beaten to death at Kamloops on May 8, 1981. Six months later, Canadian authorities convened a special summit meeting to discuss 33 of western Canada’s 200 unsolved murders, and while they generally agreed that they were seeking several killers — possibly as many as 18 — in the „Highway“ series, no solid suspects were identified. A ray of hope broke through in 1983, with the marathon confessions of serial slayers Henry Lucas and Ottis Toole including references to „several“ Canadian victims, but no charges have been filed to date, and the slayings remain unsolved.

From April 1985 through summer 1987, five suspected prostitutes were murdered in the western provinces of Canada, their killer unidentified. Authorities are still divided on the question of responsibility, and they are even known to disagree about the final body-count. In August 1987, the CBS Evening News made passing reference to a dozen hookers slain in British Columbia, but the record of related cases seems to stand at five, with one of those killed in the neighboring province of Alberta. The first to die, on April Fool’s Day 1985, was Pauline Johnson, a former prostitute found murdered at Coquitlam, B.C. Twenty months later, in December 1986, two strippers and suspected prostitutes were killed in North Vancouver, bodies dumped together near Indian River Road. Coquitlam police admitted they were „certainly interested“ in apparent connections between the murders, but comparison brought them no closer to a solution. In January 1987, officers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police visited Seattle, Washington, comparing notes on their murders with detectives from the „Green River‘ task force, but again the search led nowhere. On June 4, 1987, officers in Calgary, Alberta, found the naked, decomposed remains of Annette Leger, a 21 year-old local prostitute, stuffed in a highway culvert. Three weeks later, on June 27, another working girl 23-year-old Carol Davis – was murdered and dumped in a brushy area outside of Burnaby, B.C. Again, police acknowledged „similarities“ while stopping short of making definite connections in the case. As in the troubling „Highway Murders,“ some years earlier, these crimes remain unsolved today.

It’s hard to imagine a family doctor who is more interested in the family’s pretty teenaged girls rather than the health of his patients, but Josephakis Charalambous was just that. This was not an isolated incident, but a way of life for this most decadent of physicians. A Canadian citizen, he had been born in 1952 of Greek parentage on the island of Cyprus, but had immigrated to Canada at the age of eight with his parents and siblings and settled in Vancouver, British Columbia. According to John Griffiths in Fatal Prescription, his father was a harsh man who was hated and disrespected by his family and who was eventually estranged from his wife and children. Fatal Prescription by John Griffiths Charalambous was indulged by his mother who did everything she could to help him complete his medical education. Despite what appears to be a reasonably good relationship with his mother and sister, Charalambous had a very negative view of women. They were trash from his point of view: objects to be seduced and then discarded. His desire to dominate and control women began early in his life and characterized his behavior in high school and university. Intimately tied into his desire to become a physician was his need to be able to attract desirable women with his professional status. However, his medical degree, once attained, was not the automatic magnet that he had hoped for. Women were not flocking to him and he often used prostitutes to satisfy his sexual requirements. Things started to go seriously off track at age 33 when in 1985 he became obsessed with the 15-year-old girl, Shelley Joel, who was a patient of his, as were the other members of her family. Very much against the wishes of her parents, Charalambous pushed himself on the young woman and alienated her from her family. Griffiths suggests that Charalambous married Shelley a couple of years later to avoid censure from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada. All the time, the brainwashed Shelley was physically and mentally abused by him. And if that was not bad enough, he cheated on her with prostitutes. But that was nothing compared to his next move. Sian Simmonds, victim He had set out to conquer two young female patients Sian (pronounced Shawn) and Katie Simmonds. The girls complained to their father that the doctor had crossed the boundary of professionalism with his attentions. In 1991, their father went right to the College of Physicians and Surgeons with his concerns and the girls‘ formal complaints were lodged. The subsequent trial transcripts stated: „It wasn’t until November of 1992, that Charalambous was told that hearings into the girls‘ complaints would be held in March of 1993. On the morning of January 27, 1993, between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon, Sian Simmonds was killed in her basement suite in Surrey, B.C. She was shot twice and then beaten on the head numerous times with a blunt object. David Walter Schlender confessed to the killing in exchange for police protection for his family. He entered a plea of guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment without eligibility for parole for twenty years. The theory of the Canadian prosecutors was that Charalambous hired Brian West to arrange the murder of Sian Simmonds in order to prevent her from testifying against him at the College hearing, and that West had then hired Schlender to carry out the murder. „David Schlender was a drug user and owed money to Brian West. West told Schlender that Simmonds and her sister had to be killed to prevent them from testifying against a karate instructor friend. Charalambous was a karate instructor. West threatened Schlender and his family several times. Schlender agreed to kill Simmonds and her sister. West provided Schlender with a handgun, silencer, and bullets. West then narrowed his instructions to include only the blonde girl that drove the red jeep and lived at the Simmonds‘ house. „On 27 January 1993, after drinking beer and smoking cocaine with a friend named Brian Cann, Schlender drove alone in Cann’s car to Simmonds‘ house. He then returned home and smoked cocaine with his wife. Finally Schlender went back to Simmonds‘ house armed with a gun. Once at the house, he scratched the door of her jeep with a key. Schlender went to the front door of the house and spoke to the upstairs resident who directed Schlender to the basement. He spoke to Sian Simmonds, telling her that he had accidentally scratched her jeep. She went outside with Schlender to examine the jeep and then the two returned to the residence. Schlender gave Simmonds Cann’s insurance documents and went into the bathroom. Schlender emerged from the bathroom with the gun. He approached Simmonds who was sitting at the table and held the gun to the back of her head. Simmonds saw the gun and panicked. Schlender shot her and then beat her to death with the gun.“ Clearly, the testimony of Schlender was very damaging to the doctor, but his wife Shelley did quite a bit on her own. Charalambous had told her too many details about the murder that she could not have known otherwise. When she testified about these details that her husband had admitted to her, it carried tremendous weight with the jury. Charalambous was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with no possibility of parole until 25 years of the sentence had been served. On May 13, 1997 Josephakis Charalambous‘ appeal was dismissed by the British Columbia Court of Appeal.

Slow-witted and hyperactive, Canadian Wesley Evans missed long months of schooling due to erratic behavior which made attendance impossible. Hit by a truck at age nine, he suffered severe head injuries that left him comatose for eight days, with temporary paralysis of his left side upon regaining consciousness. Released from the hospital after four months of therapy, Evans thereafter walked with a pronounced limp, communicating in slurred speech. Eighteen months later, he was burned over twenty percent of his body while playing with a cigarette lighter. He grew up obsessed with the notion that girls — and later, women — were laughing at his scars. In time, his hidden rage would reach a lethal boiling point. On November 24, 1984, Lavonne Willems, age 27, of Vancouver, was found dead in a home she was watching for friends, then on vacation overseas. She had been murdered in the bedroom, stabbed a total of twenty-five times, her pants unbuckled and open at the waist. Detectives theorized a sexual motive, but they had no suspect in the case. On March 31, 1985, realtor Beverly Seto, 39, hosted an open house for potential customers in Matsqui, British Columbia, a Vancouver suburb. When she failed to come home for supper, her husband dropped by the empty house and found her car outside, the door ajar. A light was burning in the kitchen, though the guests had long departed. Moving through the silent rooms, he found his wife in the bedroom, her throat slashed, skirt bunched up around her waist. The coroner reported Seto had been raped , then stabbed a minimum of twenty times. In late July, police received a tip which named a young man from the Matsqui neighborhood as Seto’s killer. He was held for questioning in early August 1985, but officers found nothing to connect him with the murder. Seeking further information on their suspect, they detained a friend, 21-year-old Wesley Evans, on marijuana charges, hoping they could pressure him for details of the suspect’s movements. What they got instead, was a surprise confession to the crime. In custody, their prisoner admitted killing Seto, and went on to offer details of the Willems murder. Homicide investigators checked their street maps, startled to discover Evans lived a short four blocks from the location of the Seto slaying, barely eight blocks from the house where Willems died. The opening remarks of Wesley’s trial were heard on January 16, 1986; convicted two weeks later, he was sentenced to a term of life imprisonment, required to serve a minimum of twenty-five years before he would be eligible for parole.

Raised by an aunt whose religious zeal bordered on fanaticism, he was described as „quiet and morbid“ during early childhood. At age ten, while playing in the street, he was struck by a trolley and dragged fifty feet; the accident left him comatose for six days, with a hole in his temple, resulting in headaches and dizziness that grew progressively worse. Near the end of his life, Nelson suffered from pain so severe he was sometimes unable to walk. Aside from headaches, there were other side-affects from Nelson’s accident. His moods grew more oppressive, broken up by manic periods in which he took to walking on his hands or lifting heavy chairs with his teeth. He read the Bible compulsively, underlining numerous passages, but also shocked his aunt by talking „smut“ and spying on his female cousin as she stripped for bed. When not preoccupied with voyeurism or the scriptures, Nelson spent his time in basements, relishing the solitude and darkness. On May 21, 1918, Earle was charged with dragging a neighborhood girl into one of those basements, attempting to rape her. In court, it was revealed that Nelson had been called for military service and rejected as insane by the Naval Hospital Board, but he was convicted regardless and sentenced to two years on a penal farm. His third escape attempt was finally successful, on December 4, and Nelson would remain at large until the spring of 1921. On August 12, 1919, posing as „Roger Wilson,“ Earle married a young schoolteacher. Their relationship was short-lived, with Nelson’s sexual perversions and obsessive jealousy driving his wife to the point of a nervous breakdown after six months. He called upon her in the hospital, and there attempted to molest her in her bed, before the staff responded to her screams and drove him off. Arrested as a fugitive , he staged another break from prison in November 1923. The next two years of Nelson’s life are lost, but sometime in the interim between his flight and reappearance, Nelson made the move from rape to homicide. In sixteen months, from February 1926 to June 1927, he claimed at least twenty-two victims , preying chiefly on widows and spinsters who took in a mild-mannered boarder, impressed by his manners, his smile and the Bible he carried. On February 20, 1926, Earle rented rooms from Clara Newman, 60, in San Francisco; she was strangled and raped the same day. Following the identical murder of 60-year-old Laura Beale, in San Jose, newsmen began writing stories about „the Dark Strangler,“ but their suspect remained elusive. On June 10, Nelson was back in San Francisco, where he raped and strangled Lilian St. Mary, 63, stuffing her body under a bed. Mrs. George Russell was the next to die, in Santa Barbara, on June 26. On August 16, Mary Nesbit suffered an identical fate in Oakland. California had become too hot for Nelson, and he sought a change of scene, selecting Portland, Oregon, at random. On October 19, Beata Withers, 35, was raped and strangled, her remains deposited inside a trunk. The next day, Nelson killed Virginia Grant and left her corpse behind the furnace in a house that she had advertised for rent. October 21 found Nelson in the company of Mable Fluke; her body, strangled with a scarf, was found inside the attic of her home. Police in Portland finally identified their man, but finding him was something else, entirely. (Interviews, conducted with his aunt, recalled tales of Earle’s handwalking exploits, leading to his being christened „the Gorilla Murderer.“) Nelson struck again in San Francisco on November 18, strangling the wife of William Edmonds. On November 24, he strangled Blanche Myers in Oregon City, tucking her body beneath a bed in her rooming house. As police dragnets rendered the West Coast uninhabitable, Nelson moved eastward, hitchhiking and riding the rails. In Council Bluffs, Iowa, on December 23, he killed Mrs. John Beard, another landlady. Settling in Kansas City for Christmas, he strangled 23-year-old Bonnie Pace, rebounding on December 28 with the double murder of Germania Harpin and her eight-month-old child. On April 27, 1927, Nelson strangled Mary McConnell, age 60, in his hometown Philadelphia. A month later, in Buffalo, New York, the victim was Jenny Randolph, 35. Moving on to Detroit, he murdered landlady Minnie May and one of her tenants, Mrs. M.C. Atworthy, on June 1. Two days later, he strangled Mary Sietsorr, 27, in Chicago. Nelson feared police were closing in on him by now, and made a move to save himself that ultimately brought him to the gallows. Crossing the border into Winnipeg, Canada, he rented a room on June 8, 1927, and strangled Lola Cowan, 14-year-old daughter of his neighboring tenants, the same day. On June 9, housewife Emily Patterson was found bludgeoned and raped in her home, her body hidden underneath a bed. Hoping to cash in on his last crime, Nelson stole some clothing and resold it at a Winnipeg second-hand shop. Spending his cash on a haircut, he aroused further suspicion when the barber noticed dried blood in his hair. Recognized from his wanted poster in a local post office, Nelson was picked up and jailed at Killarney; he escaped after picking the lock on his cell with a nail file, but he was recaptured twelve hours later, as he tried to slip out of town. Nelson’s trial in the murder of Emily Patterson opened in Winnipeg on November 1, 1927. Only two witnesses – his aunt and former wife – were called by the defense in support of Nelson’s insanity plea. Convicted and sentenced to die, he was hanged on January 13, 1928. Before the trap was sprung, he told spectators, „I am innocent. I stand innocent before God and man. I forgive those who have wronged me and ask forgiveness of those I have injured. God have mercy!“ In addition to his twenty-two known murders, Nelson was the leading suspect in a triple murder in Newark, New Jersey, during 1926. The victims included Rose Valentine and Margaret Stanton, both strangled, along with Laura Tidor, shot to death when she attempted to defend them from their killer.
