Lucy Quirina de Berk insisted she was innocent at her trial in The Hague for the deaths of thirteen people. The forty-one-year-old nurse was charged with eighteen counts of murder and attempted murder at four different hospitals, and was suspected in as many as thirty cases. She was also suspected in several thefts, from stealing drugs to petty thefts of money and books about serial killers. Her victims ranged in age from a six-month-old infant to a 91-year-old man, and the list of her suspected poisons was long. While De Berk claimed that her love for life is too vast to end anyone’s, she had a history of depression and suicide attempts, and had even once advertised her own death in the papers. Prosecutors described the former prostitute as sociopathic. They accused her of killing patients over a period of four and a half years with lethal overdoses of medication. She had lied under oath about her credentials, which she admitted, had falsified her school diploma, and had stolen copies of patient records. She was also suspected of being a drug addict. Her own brother testified against her, saying she was a good liar who was capable of killing and who had shown an unhealthy attachment to terminally ill patients. Like Genene Jones, de Berk liked carrying dead children and preparing corpses, and after a death would draw a lot of attention to herself. She kept diaries about her behavior and even questioned in writing whether she was a sociopath. While she was being interrogated, she actually flirted with male detectives. In March 2003, de Burk was convicted of the murders of three elderly women and a child and given a sentence of life in prison. Her case is currently under appeal.

Crimes & Victims:

July 22, 1964: Elly HAGER-SEGOV rejects his second attempt to intimacy after already having spent one night with him before. He chokes her unconscious, stripps her and cuts her throat with a bread knife.
1965: Hans van ZON murders homosexual film director Claude BERKELEY in Amsterdam.
Marries an Italian chambermaid, Cloroline GIGI, living on her wages, continuing his affairs with other women. When he tries to kill her, she informs police and he is sent to jail for one month.
April 19, 1967: Coby van der VOORT (37), his occasional mistress, is drugged, bludgeoned with a lead pipe, stripped and stabbed with a bread knife. Van ZON unsuccessfully tries to rape her corpse.
Bragging about this murder to an aquaintance, Oude NOL, he is blackmailed by the latter.
NOL demands van ZON to assist in murder & robbery.
May 31, 1967: Hans van ZON enters a fireworks shop and clubbs the owner, Jan DONSE (80) to death with the lead pipe used before.
August 1967: Hans van ZON crushes the skull of farmer Reyer de BRUIN in Heeswijk with the lead pipe and slashes his throat.
1967 Hans van ZON clubbs widow Mrs. WOORTMEYER (once romanced by Oude NOL) she survives.

Discovery:

Mrs. WOORTMEYER identifies Hans van ZON, he is sentenced to life in 1969 and released in 1986. Oude NOL is sentenced to seven years.

Hans van ZON is released in 1986 and probably lives in the Netherlands.
