The hunt for serial killer Bible John has been narrowed down to one Scots family, the Sunday Mail can reveal.

The breakthrough in the search for the 60s killer who preyed on women in Glasgow’s Barrowland ballroom came through a crime in the city within the past two years.

The crime is said to have been a minor one – but DNA taken from the scene was found to be an 80 per cent match for that found on one of the three victims of Bible John.

And experts say that means the criminal involved is almost certainly related to the killer.

Bible John got his nickname after three killings of women who had been out at Barrowland in the late 1960s were linked.

A friend of the third victim, Helen Puttock, recalled her friend leaving with a man who fitted the description of previous suspects and who quoted passages of Scripture.

It was DNA found on Helen’s tights which was linked to the new evidence.

Detectives in Partick, Glasgow, sent the new sample to a national database where the link to Helen’s murder was found.

They are now re-investigating the two year-old case, described as a ‚relatively minor‘ offence, since it could hold the key to the identity of one of Scotland’s most infamous murderers.

The police officers leading the hunt for the killer would not comment on the Sunday Mail’s new information yesterday.

Last week, we revealed the Bible John case had been re-opened and a number of men originally suspected of the crime had been asked to give DNA samples.

One 58-year-old father-of-three, a relative of a British rock star, admitted giving a sample but denied he was Bible John.

Sources close to the probe say officers, working with criminal profilers, have targeted a ’small number‘ of men who were suspects in the original inquiry.

Detective Chief Inspector David Swindle, in charge of the hunt, would only say: ‚We are continually involved in reviewing and detecting cases and following up lines of inquiry.‘

Sources close to the investigation say police could start exhuming bodies once they establish a family link.

Every male connection to the family tree, alive or dead, will be tested.

DCI Swindle said no bodies had yet been exhumed, except for that of former soldier John McInnes, whose remains were dug up in 1996.

The exhumation from a cemetery in Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, proved inconclusive.

Scientists have already grown a full genetic fingerprint of Bible John from a tiny sample found on Helen Puttock.

Now sources close to the investigation say there is an active line of inquiry being followed up.

Another officer involved in the hunt for the killer, Detective Inspector Billy Little, refused to be drawn on the new lead.

He would only confirm that ‚a number‘ of men had been DNA tested as part of the ongoing inquiry.

But one source said: ‚The DNA (from the recent offence) is enough of a match to lead officers to believe the person who committed that offence is related to the killer.

‚They are now re-investigating that offence with a view to narrowing down the hunt to a single family tree.

‚That could involve brothers, fathers, grand-fathers and great-grandfathers.

‚At some point, they may have to apply for at least one exhumation but they are reluctant to do it too quickly after what happened the last time.‘

It is understood there will be no exhumations until every living person who could be linked to the inquiry has been ruled out.

We revealed last week how police had reopened their inquiry into the 60s killer after scientists ‚grew‘ the killer’s genetic fingerprint from material found on the tights of third victim Helen Puttock, murdered in 1969.

A small number of men – fewer than 10 – have been DNA tested. The men were suspects in the original inquiry.

One of the UK’s leading experts in forensic DNA testing, Dr Mark Jobling of Leicester University, said the 80 per cent match could point to a family member but it all depends on the quality of the samples.

He added: ‚If the sample for the killer is old, it could be some of the material has degraded to such an extent that it cannot be matched.

‚If it was an 80 per cent match, then I would say that yes there would be every likelihood that there could be a family connection.‘

Although hundreds of suspects were interviewed by police at the time of the deaths in 1968 and 1969, only a few men are thought to have been asked to give DNA tests.

Bible John is believed to have stalked Glasgow’s dance halls 35 years ago.

The first victim, Pat Docker, 25, died in February 1968, followed by Jemima McDonald, 32, 18 months later, and Helen Puttock, 29, 10 weeks after that.

It is one of Britain’s most baffling murder mysteries but police in Glasgow have never given up in the hunt.

The case returned to the public eye in 1996, when police exhumed the body of McInnes, buried in a graveyard in Stonehouse, Lanarkshire.

But the tests failed to prove any link conclusively. The men now being targeted by police are in their 50s or 60s.

At the time, witnesses described the victims leaving Barrowland with a tall, charming man with red hair in his 20s or 30s.

Beverly ALLIT, a nurse suffering from the mental illness Munchausen’s Syndrome by Proxy (a desire to kill or injure to get attention), was given 13 life sentences at Nottingham crown court in 1993 after being convicted of murdering four children and attacking nine others. Her arrest followed an investigation into several incidents of alleged tampering with patients‘ ventilators and pumps delivering intravenous medication at various hospitals in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.
The nurse is now detained in Rampton Maximum Security Hospital for the criminally insane. It is unlikely that she will ever get out, but if she does relatives of the dead children have promised to kill her. Public reaction to the case was particularly hostile, as, being a nurse, she was obviously in a position of trust and in charge of caring for children.

Patients put at risk by culture of staff secrets A NURSE at the centre of an inquiry into the deaths of two girls and two elderly women in a hospital intensive care unit was arrested at home yesterday. Kathleen Anne Atkinson, 47, was suspended a year ago from her ‡23,000-a-year post and dismissed two months later for alleged „gross misconduct“. Police were asked to investigate the deaths at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, in March last year by Leonard Coyle, the city’s coroner. The cases under investigation involve Patricia Dryden, 15, Claire Marsh, 12, Mary Burdon, 69, and an unnamed woman aged 77. Police are understood to be investigating claims that life-supporting drugs were withheld at the unit between 1991 and 1995. Mrs Atkinson was nurse in charge. Mrs Atkinson, of Stadium Villas, Wallsend, North Tyneside, said two months ago that she planned to sue for unfair dismissal. „I have done nothing wrong,“ she said. „The last 12 months have been a living nightmare and I want to clear my name. I know what people think, but they have got the wrong idea. I cannot go to an industrial tribunal until the police have done their bit.“ Hospital staff and relatives of the four who died have been interviewed by police. Christine Dryden, whose daughter, Patricia, died five days after an explosion in October 1995 in which a youth was burned and two others injured when a butane gas canister exploded, said the first she knew of allegations about the hospital was when police arrived at her home. Mrs Dryden, of Blyth, Northumberland, said: „The police said they were investigating and were notifying the relatives of the people involved. The Friday it happened she was taken to Wansbeck but was transferred to the RVI because she needed special treatment that they could give. We never had any doubt in our minds she was going to pull through. I had a room at the hospital and slept there. I was with her, along with my family, all the time I was awake. There were so many staff coming and going, doctors and nurses were moving round all the time. They told us that she was getting the best care possible and it seemed to us she was.“ A Northumbria police spokesman confirmed that Mrs Atkinson had been arrested and questioned.
=========================================
Friday, 04 April 2003 11:06 The Daily Telegraph · www.telegraph.co.uk NURSE IN DEATHS CASE LOSES JOB PLEA An intensive care nurse who was accused of hastening the deaths of patients has lost a claim for unfair dismissal. Kathleen Atkinson, 52, who has always denied the allegations, was dismissed from the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, after claims she withdrew treatment from dying patients and in one case gave a pensioner an extra dose of morphine. She accused the Newcastle NHS Hospitals Trust, of being „selective“ in its investigation into her care of patients. She told an employment tribunal in the city this week she wanted to clear her name. Two charges of attempted murder and one of incitement to murder were withdrawn after she had spent three months in custody. Dr Steven Cook, clinical director of support services who conducted the original disciplinary inquiry, told the hearing: „I was, and remain, convinced that the allegations were true and Mrs Atkinson had unilaterally hastened the deaths of patients“. Tudor Garnon, the tribunal chairman, said there was evidence that rules about nurses withdrawing or prescribing drugs had been broken.

Described by court psychiatrist as intelligent, manipulative and dangerous, in 1968 mary was found guilty of killing two other children. A bad seed in the truest sense of the word, Mary went to visit the parents of her first victim four days after his body was discovered When the grieving mom told her that the young boy was dead, she replied: „I know he’s dead. I wanted to see him in his coffin.“
Mary did her killings with the help of her best friend, Norma Bell(no relation). Norma, not as evil as Mary, ended spilling the beans about the lethal habits of her friend. Her two victims were a three and four year-old boys. Mary was also accused of trying to strangle four other girl. he was also responsible, along with Norma, of vandalizing a local nursery school and scribbling on the walls: „Fuck off, we murder, watch out, Fanny and Faggot.“
Not a model prisoner, mary escaped from Moor County Prison in 1977 and was captured three days later. Back in the Big House, Mary, not one to shy away from publicity, gave detailed accounts to the British tabloid press of how she lost her virginity to a young lad she met during her three days of liberty.
On April 30, 1998, Mary Bell’s teenaged daughter discovered her mother’s true identity as a double child-killer when their home on England’s south coast was besieged by reporters. The poor girl had „no inkling of her mother’s previous life… For the first time in 14 years the child has become aware, early this morning, of her mother’s background, which is obviously emotionally disturbing enough.“
Bell, now 41, was released from prison in 1980. She had been living in anonymity under an assumed name until word got out that she had been paid money to tell author Gitta Sereny about her criminal past. Both the Home Secretary and the Attorney General confirmed that they were looking at ways of blocking the payment. With the house under siege by the media, police took Bell and her daughter into protective custody to ensure their safety.

Soon after his appointment, James brought sister Margaret to work as a housekeeper in the castle, but her stay was short-lived, ending with her untimely death a few weeks later. Margaret was replaced, in turn, by half-sister Edith Agnes Bingham, a shrewish backbiter who quickly rubbed James the wrong way. They quarreled incessantly, and James made plans to ease her out of the position. A replacement had been scheduled to arrive on August 14, 1911, but plans abruptly changed on August 12, when James collapsed and died. Police discovered that his final meal had been a steak, prepared by Edith, and an autopsy revealed that James had died from arsenic. When Margaret and William Bingham were exhumed, more arsenic was found, and Edith faced a charge of triple murder, based upon a theory that she killed her relatives to gain a small inheritance. Her barrister reminded jurors that there was no concrete evidence of Edith using or possessing arsenic at any time. She was acquitted after twenty minutes of deliberation, and the case remains officially unsolved.

An ihrem 17.

Ian and Myra met while working for a chemical company in Hyde, Greater Manchester, England. She thought he was quite an intellectual as he sat in the lunch room reading Mein Kampf in German. As their love blossomed they became more obsessed with Nazi paraphernalia, pornography and sadism. At first they enjoyed shooting pictures of themselves in the buff and in S & M drag. They thought they could crack the local porn market with their pictures but failed. Soon they proved to be more successful in child abduction and murder.
Most of their victims were children whom they sexually molested before killing. These sadist lovebirds liked to document their murderous deeds. They kept an extensive collection of photographs of their victims as well as a recording of the screams of one girl’s torturous end. In 1966 they were arrested after Ian bragged about his killings to Myra’s brother-in-law. When the brother-in-law doubted his ability to kill, Ian smoked a young man right in front of him. The brother-in-law did not react appropriately. Instead of showing admiration, he went to the cops. Twenty years after their arrest, Ian confessed to four new murders the police had never linked to them.
In December 1995, Hindley, who is in the same jail in northern England as fellow serial killer Rosemary West, gave her first public account of her crime spree, admitting she had been wicked and corrupt but claiming she was now a changed woman. Hindley described herself as a political prisoner who was being used as a scapegoat by politicians and the media. The formerly montruous killer said: „The majority of people don’t want to accept that people like myself can change, They prefer to keep me frozen in time together with that awful mugshot so that their attitudes, beliefs and perceptions can remain intact.“ On February, 1997, her lawyers made a plea to win her release. However, a London Superior Court decreed that Myra will spend the rest of her life behind bars with no possibility of parole.
On May 21 the High Court announced a judicial review of their 1990 decision of imposing a „whole-life“ sentence on the aging neo-Nazi convicted killer. Hindley’s lawyers will argue that the decision did not reflect the views of the judge in the case, Mr. Justice Fenton, who recommended only that she serve „a very long time.“ According to her lawyers the „whole-life“ sentence represented an „irrational leap“ from the 30-year period fixed by the Home Office in 1985.
On November 21 supporters of Myra called for a review of sentencing procedures after Jack Straw reaffirmed the decision of his predecessor, Michael Howard, of never releasing Myra from prison. The ruling came under immediate attack from penal reformers and civil liberties campaigners.
Lord Longford, Britain’s leading prison reformer, expressed „total disgust and contempt“ and described her as a „good woman“. He told BBC Radio 4’s Today show: „I am very sorry indeed that a high-minded man, a Christian socialist like Jack Straw should have taken that decision. Of course it’s all as a result of the horrifying pressure exerted by the tabloids.“ Lord Longford said that Hindley had been a good young woman „until she began to work under a very gifted, but mentally disturbed man, Ian Brady. She was an infatuated accomplice 31 years ago“.
On October 7, 1998 Myra concluded a hearing at the Court of Appeals trying to overrule her „whole-life tarriff.“ In her new attempt at overturning her life sentence and win the right to a parole hearing, Hindley claimed that she can prove that she took part in the Moors murders only because Brady abused her, and threatened to kill her mother, grandmother and younger sister.
Freedom seeking Myra alleges that trigger-happy Ian bit, strangled, whipped, drugged and even blackmailed her into taking part in the murders. He lawyers claim that new material that will be presented to court includes photographs taken by Brady showing her naked with bruises and injuries caused by bites, whips and canes. Then again, they did have a sado-masochistic relationship, and bruises and bite marks are something that goes with the territory.
Brady, 60, now a patient at Ashworth Special Hospital in Merseyside, responded saying that „33 years of duplicity“ had driven „her into the realms of psychotic delusion and absurdity“. He also claimed that the bruises were faked using lipstick in their attempt at selling pornographic pictures. The cooperative type, Brady has said he would release „sick“ letters to the highest bidder that she wrote to him up to six years after they were convicted. Any payment, he added, should go to victims‘ families.
This latest court action represents the third strategy Hindley has adopted since conviction. At first she stayed silent, and then later revealed evidence of other murders in a fruitless bid to convince the public that she had reformed. Now she is claiming that she took part in the crimes unwillingly.
Brady has condemning Hindley’s attempt to blame him for the killings and released a six-page letter he sent to the Home Secretary. Brady wrote: „Hindley, in her usual Barbara Cartland prose, has created a Victorian melodrama in which she portrays herself as being forced to murder serially, by being drugged, blackmailed, whipped, raped, battered, having her family threatened with slaughter, bitten, strangled etc, etc.
„At first I was staggered and appalled, then as the catalogue of feverish crimes mounted to stultification level, I slowly realised that desperation had finally driven her over the top. It appears that the neurosis bred by her own pathological machinations has developed into psychosis. She appears to be suffering from a histrionic personality disorder, adopting manipulative attention seeking behaviour . . . an obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, concealing a strong tendency towards rebellion and acting on impulse.“
On September 21, 2001, Brady was given permission to publish his book on serial killers by the hospital for the criminally insane where his is serving his sentence. On September 11, the hospital was granted a court order to obtain a copy of the manuscript and block its publication. After determining that the book, „The Gates of Janus,“ contained no references to the hospital or Brady’s own crimes, a lawyer representing the hospital announced that they were not opposed to the publication of the book.
On November 15 , 2002, Myra — Britain’s most reviled killer — died of bronchial pneumonia due to problems with her heart. Home Office pathologist Dr Michael Heath told the hearing the 60-year-old suffered from high blood pressure and poor blood supply to the heart, resulting in blocked coronary arteries. At the time of her death, Myra was Britain’s longest serving woman prisoner.
Not the most loved person in the UK, the tabloid press held her in contempt even after death — „The Final Injustice: She Died Peacefully,“ read the front page headline of the Daily Mail. Though some people lobbied for her release after serving 36 years, most remain horrified about her claims of „having paid her debt to society.“ Ironically, by the time her smoked-ravaged lungs gave out, she was on the threshhold of being released.

On December 21, 1986, detectives in Wiltshire, England, announced their search for connections in the recent slayings of two women, killed within hours of each other at Salisbury. In the early-morning hours of December 19, victim Ruth Perrett, age 25, was found naked and dead in her room at a half-way hostel for recovering mental patients. Last seen alive at a party the evening before, she had been raped and strangled by her assailant. The following day, police at Ringwood, near Southampton, were following up a missing person report when they found 45-year-old Beryl Deacon dead in her car, another victim of sexual assault. A third fatality was added to the list when homicide investigators voiced concerns about a link between the recent deaths and that of Linda Cooke, age 24, a one-time barmaid raped and murdered in the town of Portsmouth, on December 10. Cooke’s death was seen as possibly related to a string of rapes, targeting nurses and female doctors at area hospitals over the past year. Police arrested several suspects in the case, but none were ultimately prosecuted. The most recent, described in press reports as a sailor, was released in January 1987 with no charges filed against him. At this writing, the case remains officially unsolved.

On November 29, an unnamed suspect in the case of Wendy Knell was charged with rape, but his incarceration did not halt the rash of murders. Three days after Caroline Pierce was discovered, searchers at Colchester — fifty miles northeast of London — retrieved the decomposing remains of 18-year-old Fiona Gallant from the slope of a highway embankment. As in London, the Colchester case was believed to be linked with an on-going series of rapes in the area. At this writing, no solution has been announced for the murders in London and Colchester. Police refuse to speculate on possible links between Fiona Gallant’s death and the crimes in London, while the killer (or killers) remains at large.
